Dexter Quito Music
2017 Policies & Procedures

General Information

Weekly private lessons are offered in 30, 45, or 60-minute sessions, depending on the student's age and level. Students are expected to arrive in a timely manner, with all required materials and music. Parents and siblings may quietly use the waiting area outside of the studio, wait in their vehicle, or run errands so long as they return to pick up their student in a timely fashion.

Practice and Instrument

Private students are expected to practice daily on a well-maintained instrument. It is recommended that acoustic pianos be tuned at least twice a year. If you wish to discuss a student's progress, parents may speak with the teacher during the first five minutes of the students lesson--but not afterwords, in order to respect the next students time slot.

Students are recommended to use a canvas tote bag to carry books and an assignment notebook which will be used to keep track of assigned pieces and practice suggestions/goals for each week. The student/parent is expected to cover the additional cost for these items.

Tuition and Payment

The tuition rates are determined based on a monthly calendar of weekly private lessons. (Please contact the instructor about the current rates.) Payments are due on the 1st of each month or at the beginning of each first lesson. Acceptable forms of payment would be cash, check, or online using debit/credit card. The student is responsible for bringing tuition to the lesson on or prior to the 1st month. Late payments will incur a late fee of $1.00 for each day that it is late. If a payment is not made by the students second lesson the teacher reserves the right to postpone all lessons until a full payment is made. The teacher also reserves the right to raise the tuition at the beginning of each new academic year.

Summer Months

Students are strongly encouraged to continue their weekly lessons even during the summer months. The summer months allow for the student to focus more of their musical education without having their normal school workload. Not only does the teacher feel strongly about continuing the students musical education throughout the the summer months, but the teacher's livelihood also depends upon a regular income even during the summer because the tuition rate has been determined based on a 12-month calendar year. However, if a student fails to continue their lesson during the summer the student unfortunately cannot be guaranteed a spot in the studio in the fall.

Calendar and Schedule

The tuition rates are determined based on a calendar of weekly private lessons. However, the teacher does not teach during the week of Thanksgiving, the week of Christmas and on New Year’s day. The teacher also has two unpaid weeks during the year that are reserved for the teacher to take off from lessons as needed for illness, vacations or teacher conferences. If the teacher decides not to use all of the two weeks the student benefits by receiving those lessons for free.

Makeup Lessons

Due to the teachers limited availability makeup lessons cannot be guaranteed. However, if an absence arises due to an unforeseen situation, such as an accident, illness, or a family emergency and the student/parent indicates a desire for a makeup lesson, the teacher will make an effort to accommodate a makeup lesson. If a student must miss a lesson due to school activities, church events, vacations etc... please notify the teacher as soon as possible. Please be courteous to the teacher and fellow students by notifying the teacher at least 24 hours in advance regarding any known upcoming absences. Please be aware that only one make up lesson can be accommodated per month. If you know in advance that you will need to miss more than one of your scheduled lessons please inform the teacher as soon as possible so that the teacher can try and accommodate your needs. Notifying the teacher and rescheduling a lesson is the students/parents responsibility. Lessons that are not immediately rescheduled within a week will be considered to be forfeit. Any makeup lesson that is missed or canceled is considered to be forfeit and cannot be rescheduled. If the teacher must cancel the lesson then a makeup lesson will be scheduled. Also, please note that if a student is late to a lesson or a makeup lesson the time that is missed will not be added on to the end of a lesson or made up at a latter date. All makeup lessons will be given at the teachers home studio.

Discontinuing Lessons

Every student stops taking lessons at some point. Ideally, this decision is made thoughtfully with plenty of discussion between the teacher, parent, and student so that lessons can cease with a positive sense of closure. For this reason, the teacher asks for one month's notice writing prior to discontinuing lessons. However, the teacher respects the student's right to end lessons at any time.

Please note: At the discretion of the teacher, students may be asked to discontinue lessons at any time if they have unpaid tuition, an excess amount of absences/unprepared lessons, or if they show lack of interest.

Parent Participation

Parents are encouraged to be supportive and active participants in practice at home. Parents are also encouraged to attend and quietly observe lessons approximately once a month.

Studio Events

Each year the studio schedules a fall recital for private students and their parents. Performing in a formal recital setting is an exciting opportunity for students to showcase their hard work and improvement over the year in the presence of their family and friends. This event is usually held in December and is free of charge with the exception of the semi-formal attire and the pot luck style dinner.

There are many great ways to stay informed regarding studio news and events.
